Research areas:  19th Century Mexico, urban history; grassroots resistance  to globalization in Mexico and Ecuador.

I teach contemporary history courses, such as The Violence of Everyday Life in Latin America; Globaliztaion:  Historical Perspectives on Contemporary Crisis.

I recently concluded a 3 year  tenure as coordinator of our university's Conflict Studies Program.  I taught the introductory course and senior seminar in conflict studies.

I serve on the board of directors of the Mexico Solidarity Network, and I am  co-founder of the Ecuador Solidarity Network.
