Welcome Message Santiago de Compostela 10th September 1999
Dear colleagues,
We are aware that communication via Internet is- and will be- fundamental to stay abreast of any professional and academic activity. The Internet is nowadays the only media where information flows free from serious economic and hierarchical problems or time and space limitations .
Take for instance our own experience in the haste that -to our regret- we were forced to organise the Second International Conference History under Debate. Access to the Internet divided historians from the different countries into two groups: those who had the convocation e-mailed and therefore had six months to write their papers and arrange their journey to Santiago de Compostela; and those who only received the convocation via postal mail, and therefore recieved the information only a few weeks before ( some of them are still receiving the leaflet !).
History under Debate (HuD) has therefore decided to formalize, open and extend the e- mail list we have been using and create the possibility of free subscription ( obviously you may cancel your membership freely) and multilateral interchange of messages . We are convinced that the Internet is the ideal channel to make possible the continuity of HuD as a worldwide network of historians in between conferences. We start off with an initial list of colleagues from the following countries:
The HuD list will, of couse, be moderated from Santiago de Compostela. Please send any message you would like to have disseminated to h-debate@cesga.es or alternatively to had@cesga.es.
Messages are accepted in all languages . However, HuD will translate, whenever possible, the messages and disseminate them in Spanish, English and French.
The list will include messages of the following kind:
1) We will continue to inform about our activities and History under Debate iniciatives. The list, in this sense, will complement the Website, which we will be permanetly updated ( so that there will be information not included on the list and viceversa).
2) We will re-send those messages we receive (especially if they are from list members) which we consider to be of interest about other current historical activities and iniciatives both historiographical and scientific, academic and professional.
3) We will re-send those messages we receive and find interesting in terms of request and interchange of information on issues relevant for research, reflection, debate and the profession...
4) We will re-send those messages which provide opinions potentially conducive to a multilateral debate on history and past and present historiography, always in an atmosphere of complete respect for all views . There is no need to stress the importance of this section for History under Debate, a network of (self) critical thought.
Our digital pursuit of interchange, debate and consensus will also be conducted via chat and news channel .
The issues which interest us have already been defined in the conference schedules, the international inquiry, the seminar and our signed papers on historiography . But this is far from being closed list. History, like historigraphy, is an everyday task.
We are therefore open to new experiences in our debates and discussions : the contents of the list will be tailored by its contributors : you Looking forward to your suggestions and contributions.
Always history uppermost ,
Carlos Barros
