The Congress of the Americas and the World Vernacular Congress meet in alternative years. The Congress of the Americas meets in Monterrey, Mexico and the World Vernacular Congress meets in Puebla, Mexico. The Congress of the Americas will meet next on October 13th to 15th 2004 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Both congresses, which have become immensely significant, started during the fiscal crisis in 1992-1993 when it was difficult for Latin American scholars to finance trips to international meetings. So it was decided, with great success, to organize an interdisciplinary congress in Mexico and invite overseas participants. The congress grew enormously and in 2003 it became two congresses with two locations which are appropriate to their two themes. The Congess of the Americas inclines towards political and economic issues but includes also some cultural themes. You can see past congresses with their papers at the Congress History website. The Congess of the Americas has a distinguished panel of vice presidents for subject areas. The subject areas are in effect mini congresses on specific areas. Background |
