Presentation
We must acknowledge that the debate is not an academic form as yet. At university, knowledge is reproduced like in the Middle Ages vertically through authorities despite the successive democratic reforms, of whose tradition we consider ourselves a part.
Is the function of the teacher necessary in teaching and research ? No one in his right mind would answer no. Rather the question is: what should be done so that this hierarchical teaching function - usually held for life - does not lead to a stagnation of our disciplines, history in particular ? Through the combination of history and learning, verticality and horizontality, authority and debate, which nowadays has become even more necessary if we are to know where history is heading for and where we want it to go.
Debating implies saying publicly what is held and remarked privately. And that is far frome easy. In fact, one of the great improvements of the Second International Conference History under Debate, as opposed to the one held in 1993, has been the unusual sincerity of the colleagues that have participated in the round tables and the debates that have followed each thematic section. This forum of History under Debate is created with a view to sustain this debate until the next conference . And there is no faster means- given its globality, accessibility and speed- than the Internet.
Brief contributions are welcome both on your own iniciative and in response to what others have said, thus providing opinions on both the abstracts and the reviews from the Second International Conference History under Debate. Alternatively, you may broach issues related to history, historiography and the theory of history provided it is done within a framework of personal respect and intelectual tolerance towards other people's opinions.
History under Debate will circulate those messages it considers of interest through its mailing list and viveversa.
Post-conference debate has commenced. We look foward to receiving your e-mails at had@cesga.es.
