PRESENTACION DEL DEBATE "HISTORIA MUNDIAL/HISTORIA GLOBAL"

El auge de la globalización ha generado en los años 90 del pasado siglo XX un nuevo objeto de investigación, debate y reflexión: la historia mundial. La historia mundial reaviva conceptos ya conocidos (sistema mundial, comparatividad, civilización), anima nuevos enfoques (contactos interculturales, transversalidad), aporta un punto de vista global a viejas tematicas de historia económica, historia de las ideas y de las mentalidades, historia de la religión, etc.

Su novedad reside en la propuesta firme de un ámbito global para los estudios históricos que supera y contextualiza las tradicionales historias locales y nacionales, impulsando de este modo las historias continentales, subcontinentales, intercontinentales. Paralelamente, y sin conexión directa con lo anterior, Historia a Debate ha venido practicando esta nueva escala de investigación, debate y reflexión, en el campo de la metodología, la historiografía y la teoría de la historia, animando, desde el mundo latino, la recomposición de la comunidad mundial de historiadores hacia el nuevo siglo y el nuevo paradigma.

Proponemos con el año 2000 este nuevo debate de historia, historiografía y teoría, a escala mundial, hasta hoy restringido a los Estados Unidos, para contribuir así, practicando el multiculturalismo historiográfico (los mensajes serán en ingles y español, principalmente), a la realización de un aspecto crucial de la propuesta de historia mundial, y de la proposición paradigmática de HaD: la superación plena del eurocentrismo en el mundo global que viene. No habrá, pensamos, una historia mundial/global mientras no exista una historiografía mundial/global mas y mejor interconectada. Por tratarse de una tendencia historiográfica reciente, ofrecemos unas referencias mínimas.

Libros basicos: Marshall GS. HODGSON, Rethinking world history. Essays on Europe, Islam, and World History, Cambridge University Press, 1993 (recopilacion de ensayos de los años 50 y 60); Philip POMPER, Richard H. ELPHICK and Richard T. VANN (eds.), World history. Ideologies, structures, and identities, Blackwell Publishers, 1998 (textos de la World History Conference de 25-26 marzo 1994, reproducidos tambien en el nº 34 de la revista History and Theory).

En los años 90 se han creado, asimismo, una revista (The Journal of World History, Hawai), una asociacion (World History Association, Philadelphia) y una lista de distribucion ( http://www.h-net.msu.edu/~world/ ).

Se suelen citar como precedentes de la nueva historia mundial/global a Marx, Weber, Spengler, Toynbee, Gramsci, Braudel, Parsons, Wallerstein, Gunder Frank, Skocpol, Fukuyama...Cuestiones para este nuevo debate:

¿Es necesaria y conveniente esta nueva escala de la investigación histórica?
¿Que relación ha de tener con la historia local, regional y nacional?
¿Y con la microhistoria de los años 80?
¿Cajón de sastre o linea de investigación, reflexión y debate, suficientemente homogénea?
¿Interesa a la historia del tiempo presente o de todos los periodos históricos?
¿Que puede aportar al balance del siglo XX?
¿Que puede aportar al estudio renovado de las civilizaciones/formaciones sociales históricas?
¿Interesa para el debate actual sobre el futuro de la globalización (después de Seattle, sobre todo)?
¿Que relación ha de tener la historia mundial con la historia universal de nuestros manuales de enseñanza?
¿Que relación ha de tener la historia mundial con la historia universal de los filósofos?
¿Que relación ha de tener la historia mundial con la historia total/global del materialismo historico y la escuela de Annales?
¿Se trata de una fragmentacion mas de la disciplina o de un manera de combatirla?
¿Es la historia mundial/global parte del nuevo paradigma historiografico?

PRESENTATION OF THE DEBATE ‘WORLD HISTORY/ GLOBAL HISTORY'

The increasing importance of globalisation gave rise in the nineties to a new object of research, debate and reflection: world history. World history brings new life to already known concepts (world system, comparability, civilisation) encourages new approaches ( intercultural contacts, cross-section studies) provides a global point of view to old themes of economic history, history of ideas and mentalities, history of religions etc.

Its novelty lies in its firm proposal for a global sphere for historical studies which surpases and contextualises the traditional local and national histories, thus promoting continental, subcontinental and intercontinental histories.

In parallel with this, although with no link with the above mentioned, History under Debate has been applying this new scale of research, debate and reflection in the fields of methodology, historiography and theory of history. By so doing, it has developed a Latin-world promoted rearrangement of the global community of historians with a view to the new century and the new paradigm.

At the beginning of 2000, we propose this new debate on history, historiography and theory on a world scale, a debate which so far has been restricted to the USA so that we may contribute through historiographical multiculturalism to the accomplishment of a crucial aspect of what World History proposes and which is the paradigmatic proposal of History under Debate as well: the full overcoming of Eurocentrism in the global world ahead.

There will not be a world/ global history so long as there is not a greater and much better interlinked historiography .

Since we are dealing with a recent historiographic tendency, we include some basic references :

Basic bibliography: Marshall GS HODGSON, Rethinking World History. Essays on Europe, Islam and World History, Cambridge University Press, 1993 ( a collection of essays from the fifties and sixties); Philip POMPER, Richard H. ELPHICK and Richard T. VANN ( eds.) World History. Ideologies,Structures and Identities, Blackwell Publishers, 1998 ( texts from the World History Conference held in March 25-26 1994, also included in the journal History and Theory issue 34) The nineties have seen the creation of a new journal ( The Journal of World History, Hawai ), an association( World History Association, Philadelphia) and a mailing list ( http://www.h-net.msu.edu/~world/ ).

The following names are usually cited as precedents of the new world history: Marx , Weber, Spengler, Toynbee, Gamsci, Braudel,Parsons, Wallerstein, Gunder Frank, Skocpol, Fukuyama...

Questions for the new debate:

Is this new scale of historical research necessary and relevant ? 
What relation should it have with local, regional and national history ?
Is it as jumble of different things or a new, homogeneous enough line of research, reflection and debate?
Is it relevant for the history of current events or for all historical periods ?
What can it contribute to the assessment of the 20th century?
What can it add to the renewed study of civilisations/ historical social formations?
Is it relevant for the current debate on the future of globalisation (especially after Seattle)?
What relation should World History have with the universal history of our textbooks ?
What relation should World History  have with the universal history of philosophers ?
What relationship should World History have with the Total/ Global History of materialism and the school of Annals ?
Is it yet another fragmentation of the discipline or a means of fighting it ?
Is World/ Global History part of the new historiographical paradigm ?
