The Medieval History Journal
Launched two years ago, this journal has as its domain the whole of the medieval universe and seeks to explore all facets of the medieval past. Interdisciplinary and comparative history inhere in the very nature of the journal. Published by SAGE in India every April and October, with Professor Harbans Mukhia of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi as its editor, it accepts articles after referees' evaluation. The inaugural issue, published in April 1998, focused on historically contextualising the notion of the 'medieval' in Europe, India, China, Japan, the Arab-Muslim world and Eurasia. The lead article was by Jacques Le Goff on 'The Moyen Age of Georges Duby.'
The next three issues have covered a wide spectrum of themes and regions: literature, gender history, art history, commerce, religious conversions, historical concepts, etc., and contributions have come in from across the world. Book reviews and discussion papers also form part of the journal. The issue due April 2000 will focus on 'Law and its Images in Medieval Europe', guest edited by Norbert Schnitzler of Bielefeld, Germany. Future special issue envisaged are: The individual in medieval societies; Medieval polities and their legitimation; and, Societal transitions in the medieval world.
