Hello, All;
I'm taking the liberty of sending this to all of our ukans.edu History discussion lists on the assumption that many subscribers will find this item interesting and may find the HJG site a useful aid to research. -----Introduction-----
You got now the first issue of a new electronic newsletter, The History Journals News. It is the organ of "The History Journals Guide" (HJG), a web directory for history journals. So it seems useful to say some words about this guide at the beginning.
The HJG started as a student project published first unter the title "Historische Zeitschriften" (Historical Journals) in July 1997 on the homepage of the History Department at the University of Cologne. At the beginning of 1998 it moved on the sites of the "Nachrichtendienst fuer Historiker" (News servive for historians) by Tobias Berg and changed its title into "The History Journals Guide". There were a German and an English version, but the first one was ceased in February 1999 because it meant too much work for one person to maintain a bilingual service. A month before, in January 1999, the HJG got a part of the WWW-Virtual Library: The History Index.
History is understood in a broad sense as the study of the past including all periods, all regions and all fields. The HJG covers scientific and popular-scientific journals, current and already ceased journals, newsletters of historical societies, institutes and study-groups, publications appearing irregualarly or infrequently, interdisciplinary periodicals dealing also with history, and bibliographies to journals articles. It aims to become a starting-point for historians (researchers, graduates, students) and other interested persons, e.g. librarians, and intends to provide up-to-date information.
The directory provides information about the contents, editors, publishers, frequency, websites etc. It should be better said it will provide. At the moment not all journals are described in this way--unfortunately. The HJG can be browsed by title, by language, by institutions (publishers, societies), by period, by region, by subject and by e-journals. Many of these categories are still under construction. The journals are ordered alphabetically in all categories. And journals with bi- or trilingual titles are listed by each of them. All sites can be searched through the WWW-VL search engine.
Besides the journal material the HJG contains a listing with abbreviations of history journals, links to the electronic distribution of printed journals, to e-mail contents services and to issues dealing with the future of history journals, but also to other web directories for history journals and to the citation and evaluation of online sources. There is also a special category with announcements: new journals, Call for Papers, Editors Wanted.
The latest service of the HJG is an electronic newsletter: The History Journals News. Is this really necassary? In my opinion: yes--otherwise I would not publish it. One aim of the HJN is to inform the subscribers about new journals entries and updated journal information. This will probably contain the most extensive part of the first issues. But also announcements shall be distributed. And it is planned to publish short articles about issues like the electronic distribution of history journals or the development of e-journals in the field of the historical science.
If you want to announce a new journals or a new service like the electronic distribution or if you want to write a short article dedicated to an issue interesting to the subscribers, send an e-mail to: a2534304@smail.uni-koeln.de
I hope the newsletter will be useful to you.
Stefan Blaschke.

The American Association for History and Computing (AAHC): What is the Future of History Journals in the Electronic Age? <http://www.theaahc.org/discuss.htm>
The AAHC will sponsor discussions on varying themes devoted to "the sensible and appropriate marriage of history and computing technology". It started an online and open discussion about the future of historical journals, "an issue of wide concern to all history professionals", with the intention "to raise and explore the many issues surrounding publication in the electronic age". Until now there are no contributions.

It turns out interesting to verify that in many of the sessions, the
assistants and participants finished raising a debate around the necessity to
maintain an ethical commitment of the profession with History. This question was
present in the sessions on balance and even in those of prospectiva. The loss of
the ideologies, of the global approaches, the academic protagonism of the
relativismo and the skepticism to posmoder us is not today, whatsoever, limited
that allow the historian to get rid of a responsibility, the one to possibly
make of History an agent- modest of change of articles of incorporation. More
than ever the History of History he is fashionable between the Historians, who
need to include/understand the nature of science which they handle, and in some
case, until his purpose. If the function of History, like the one of the rest of
the Humanities, is not already the one to become vehicle of formation of
identities - east subject in the dedicated table the historiography and to the
nationalism was approached -she is perhaps the one to contribute to form to the
citizenship in values and of generating its conscience critical, as they have
come indicating the educative authorities from our country during some time; it
is left something of that characteristic of the historian like agitator of
consciences, who said to Max Weber in 1919 when speaking of the charismatic
intellectual and science like vocation.
