The 1999-InkriT-conference "RETHINKING PROGRESS" showed the urgent need for politico-theoretical debates around concepts their origine(s), actuality and "enjeu", their theoretical and strategic productivity or the necessity to rearticulate them under new conditions or even to "win them back" (could, e.g., the concept of "progress" be reformulated or was it to be dropped?). Hence the idea came up to dedicate the conference 2000 mainly to such discussions. Obviously the best thing was, to link this with the works for the Historico-Critical Dictionary of Marxism. The selection of subjects & speakers draws mainly upon entries & authors of HKWM 5 (COUNTERPUBLIC to HEGEMONY).
In each of the dictionary-workshops the conception of one of the articles will be presented by the author (in 20-30 minutes), followed by three commentaries (5-10 minutes each). After this the general debate is open.
The main purpose of the commentaries is to help clarifying the problematic which should be linked to a certain entry, to give critical advice as to the structure of an article, to add relevant material, and to raise questions as to the actualization of the theoretical field. The chairperson ("Moderator") has to make sure. that the debate does really what it should do contribute to the making of a concrete article with a meaningful theoretical and political intervention. -- The outlines or drafts of the articles have to be made accessible to the commentators and to all those who want to participate in a certain workshop (please ask for it! preferably via e-mail) not later than two weeks before the conference. For the more traditional form of Round Tables one of the parallel "lines" is reserved. Here it is possible to present specimens of the respective research work (in 15-20 minutes each). We ask for summaries in English to be sent around before the conference. Main purpose of this working conference -- in which, as in Brecht's original conception of the didactic plays, there shouldn't be any impermeable separation between actors and public -- is the promotion of a marxist scientific community, which is necessary (not only, but also) for the HKWM-project. We expect progresses in networking and "synergy". The preliminary programm has to be seen as an offer. Where we had enough information we tried to "join forces" in a promising way. Some will be surprised to find their names in one of the functions of chairing or commenting on a paper, without having been asked beforehand. We expect a certain amount of tolerance resulting from the comprehension, that it is not easy to combine about 100 individuals in a productive pattern and to make sure, that no one is excluded from active participation. No one has to, but every one can possibly participate. Who has not yet been assigned a place within the maze of the conference, should offer a commentary to one of the scheduled papers. Additional presentations can only be accepted in exceptional cases.
Conference languages are English and German. There will be no translation.
