PÍO XII, UN "FILONAZI" DE CHISTE

A menudo tienen gracia las acusaciones que se vierten contra la Iglesia o su Jerarquía. Y no por repetidas son menos jocosas. Pero, entre otras, ya la de Jarolaski, quien trata a Pío XII como "papa filonazi (y conste que no es un juicio valorativo sino una opinión descriptiva)", asevera, es el colmo de las fantasmadas. Según veo, no es el único, desafortunadamente, que falsea -no es un juicio valorativo, sino una descripción en toda regla- la posición de la Iglesia, pero su diatriba es de lo más vulgar Tratar al Papa Pacelli de nazi. En base a esa documentación, ingente, recientemente se han publicado innumerables obras, traducidas al español, sobre el asunto "PÍO XII, HITLER Y MUSSOLINI" (Autor GIORGIO ANGELOZZI GARIBOLDI); LOS JUDÍOS, PÍO XII Y LA LEYENDA NEGRA HISTORIA DE LOS HEBREOS SALVADOS DEL HOLOCAUSTO (de ANTONIO GASPARI) o EL PAPA DE HITLER LA VERDADERA HISTORIA DE PÍO XIII, de JOHN CORNWELL, cuyo denominador común es el que sigue.

Pío XII conocía bien Alemania. Fue nuncio en Berlín durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y, luego, como Secretario de Estado de Pío XI, tuvo numerosas intervenciones ante el rumbo que estaba tomando la política alemana. En calidad de tal, intervino decisivamente en la encíclica de Pío XI, conocida como «Mit brennender Sorge» (que puede traducirse «Con ardiente preocupación»). La iniciativa de la encíclica partió, contrariamente a lo que se cree, de los obispos alemanes, el primer borrador fue redactado en Roma por el Cardenal Faulhaber. El entonces Cardenal Pacelli, que dominaba el alemán, le dió forma definitiva y, presentada a Pío XI, fue firmada y publicada el 14 de marzo de 1937.

La encíclica denunciaba la ideología y la conducta nazis, y condenaba el culto a la personalidad en términos que vale la pena citar. «Quien quiera que, con sacrílego desconocimiento de las diferencias esenciales entre Dios y la criatura, entre el Hombre-Dios y el simple hombre, osara levantar a un mortal, aunque fuera el más grande de todos los tiempos, a nivel de Cristo, más aún, por encima de El o contra El, ese merece que se le diga que es un profeta de fantasías, al que se le aplica espantosamente la palabra terrible de la Escritura. El que vive en los Cielos se ríe de ellos». Nadie había hablado antes, directamente y en esos términos, a Hitler. No advirtió quién pueda haberlo hecho, ni antes ni después, pero si alguien lo hizo, a lo sumo podrá decir que hizo lo mismo que la Iglesia alemana y sus Obispos, que el futuro Pío XII y que Pío XI.

Fue una sorpresa general, para fieles, autoridades y policía, la lectura de la encíclica, el domingo 21 de marzo de 1937, en todos los templos católicos alemanes, que eran más de 11.000. La unanimidad fue absoluta. Y, en toda la breve historia del III Reich, nunca recibió éste en Alemania una crítica que llegara a acercarse a la de «Mit brennender Sorge».

La Iglesia Católica fue así quien, antes que nadie, cuando aún no había estallado la guerra, con más valor que nadie, condenó al nazismo, mientras países que hoy callan cuando se la ataca, negociaban con Berlín.

A partir de 1940, ya elevado al Papado, Pío XII multiplicó los esfuerzos y las intervenciones en defensa de los judíos perseguidos en Alemania y en los países ocupados por ella. Es imposible reseñar todas esas intervenciones; baste decir que, veinte años después, cita el Padre Blet que el entonces cónsul de Israel en Milán, Pinchas Lapides, cree poder evaluar en 860.000 el número de judíos salvados por la Iglesia.

Después del radio mensaje pontificio de la Navidad de 1942, el Servicio de Seguridad del Reich afirmó del Papa que era «el portavoz de los judíos criminales de guerra». Como "papa filonazi" no está nada mal.

En un interesante artículo de Vincent Tremolet de Villers. comentando también la obra del P. Blet, se relata que cuando en 1943, los alemanes entraron en Roma, los jefes de la comunidad judía fueron convocados al cuartel general de las SS, donde se les intimó a entregar en veinticuatro horas 50 kilos de oro, bajo amenaza de ser deportados todos los judíos de la ciudad. El Gran Rabino de Roma, Zolli, no habiendo podido reunir más de 35 kilos, apeló a Pío XII, que ordenó fundir los vasos sagrados de todas las parroquias romanas. Este gesto fue supérfluo, puesto que poco después el mismo rabino informaba al Papa que los quince kilos faltantes habían sido donados por la comunidad católica romana.

A partir de allí, sin embargo, empezó la persecución a los judíos de Roma. El Papa, entonces, ordenó levantar las barreras canónicas y abrir las clausuras de los monasterios que recogieron hombres y mujeres indistintamente, para protegerlos de la persecución. Tan valiente y ejemplar caridad tuvo frutos espirituales el más destacado, la conversión del propio rabino Zolli, quien se hizo bautizar tomando el nombre de Eugenio, por Eugenio Pacelli, Papa Pío XII.

Hubo varios proyectos de deportación del Papa por parte de los nazis, quienes pensaban bombardear el Vaticano, pero el Papa rechazó siempre las sugerencias de fuga, aunque algunos de sus colaboradores idearon un plan, entre 1942 y 1943, para poner a salvo al Papa en España, con el plácet del Gobierno de Franco.

En las obras anteriormente señaladas se da a conocer también una carta del científico judío alemán -radicado en los Estados Unidos- Albert Einstein en la que elogia al Pontífice por su defensa de los judíos. En una declaración del 23 de diciembre de 1940 tras poner su esperanza en la resistencia al nazismo, primero en las universidades y luego en la prensa libre alemana, Einstein admitió que la única organización que tuvo el coraje de ponerse contra Hitler fue la Iglesia Católica. y de un desinterés despreciativo pasó a una admiración incondicional y sin reservas».

Y hasta en el memorial de Yad Vachem, en el valle de los Justos, un árbol fue plantado en recuerdo de Pío XII.

Ya se ha visto todo lo que hizo el Papa Pacelli por los perseguidos. Pero si él hizo eso por los amenazados directamente, debía velar con especial cuidado por su propia grey y por la Iglesia alemana. La amenaza de crear una Iglesia cismática en Alemania, con las consiguientes persecuciones a obispos, sacerdotes y fieles católicos, estaba latente, y solamente su prudencia, permitió superar esos tiempos de prueba.

Los católicos tenemos obligación de restablecer la verdad. Y, de paso, de reirnos con los chistes.
