1º) Como Vd. acertadamente advierte, no creo en modo alguno que esté todo dicho sobre la participación civil en la contienda de 1936-1939. Éste, como cualquier otro aspecto de la Historia toda, es susceptible de profundización. Con todo, los datos aportados por Salas fueron seguidos en un plano sumamente coincidente por Casas de la Vega (en cuanto a Milicias Nacionales) y más recientemente por Juan Carlos Peñas (sobre movilización carlista), por ejemplo. Unos y otros, provienen de Archivos Militares y, fundamentalmente, de legajos del Servicio Histórico Militar, que Salas se encargó en su día de patear, con o sin ejercicios de influencia (asuntos éstos que de ser probados en nada restan seriedad a una labor concienzuda de años).

2º) En lo que concierne a enumeración de víctimas de ambas zonas, como Vd. no desconocerá tampoco, Salas encabezó la lista de investigadores en busca de las cifras exactas, y en un momento en que los trabajos regionales/locales brillaban por su ausencia. Hasta la publicación de "Pérdidas de la Guerra Civil", todo eran meras conjeturas y extremas divagaciones que tenían más que ver con corsetes ideológicos que con sinceros acercamientos científicos a un aspecto tan escabroso de la Guerra Civil como el que Vd. cita. Estimó entonces Salas que un buen punto de partida -aun reconociendo su carácter no neutral-, eran los propios censos decenales y las estadísticas oficiales por causas de muerte elaboradas por el INE a partir de inscripciones efectuadas en el Registro Civil tras la contienda.

Y si bien hoy no pueden admitirse con ciertas matizaciones (debidas sobre todo a las inscripciones diferidas que se produjeron con posterioridad y que habrían de ser recogidas en monografías locales, según señala Vd. certeramente) las conclusiones numéricas de víctimas, considero que tal casuística en modo alguno puede producirse en la evaluación de los contendientes (ni mucho menos en el material de guerra empleado).

3º) No me parece apropiado, por tanto, regatear mérito a los estudios de Salas Larrazábal sobre participación civil en la Guerra aduciendo diferencias de resultado en las investigaciones de víctimas. Son campos muy distintos, en los que se utilizan fuentes documentales dispares y de metodología no menos diferenciada.

4º) Aplaudo, asimismo, el que Vd. estime (si no he de entender mal su intervención) como desacertada la calificación de la Historia escrita por la burguesía en bloque No entraré por hoy en el fondo del asunto (para el que si me animo tras siglos de pereza, contestaré debidamente la intervención de Guillamón con algo más que perorata marxistoide), pero me congratula que desde su posición de amante de la Historia quepa la coincidencia en algo que -desconocía- levantara tantos recelos el rol del historiador.

A fuer de sincero, nunca había reparado en ello. Pero cuando leí el panfleto del prof. Díez (creo recordar), la apreciación literaria de una historia escrita por la burguesía, me pareció una chorrada. Y no digamos lo de la Guerra Civil entendida como "lucha de clases".

Seguí pensando lo mismo. Y ahora, que acabo de recopilar datos biográficos de D. Carlos Marx, me reitero en mi parecer. Marx, que se pasó la vida rebañando herencias a familiares continentales, invirtiendo en bolsa, presumiendo del título nobiliario de su esposa Jenny Von Westwalen, disponiendo de criada para todos los menesteres (incluso el de cohabitar con ella la dejó "preñá" y le endiñó el churumbel a su amigo Engels, mientras le pedía dinero "prestado"), y a quien la suegra (válgame Dios, otra vez ¡¡¡ la suegra !!!) le reprochaba
