Pero no carecemos de la experiencia para navegar dignamente en el turbulento piélago de calamidades que es nuestra golpeada sociedad. Historia en escritura... Hacer la historia de estas cosas es apasionante, pero más lo ha sido la participación como "observador callejero" directo. Las noticias cotidianas -casi de hora en hora- han dado la vuelta al mundo globalizado. La Argentina ha entrado en la condición de modelo de no se sabe bien qué. En primer lugar, hasta donde puedo entender, nadie ha realizado en la lista de HaD un panegírico de Hugo Chávez. Yo particularmente lo que he mencionado son los procesos históricos anteriores que demuestran circunstancias recurrentes, como es la participación de la joven oficialidad en procesos de insurgencia popular a lo largo del siglo XX. Chávez es uno más de centenares de oficiales que se rebelaron contra el orden establecido en 1928, 1945, 1952, 1958, 1962 y 1992. No creo que eso se pueda tomar como un panegírico hacia Chávez. En segundo lugar, creo que la información que usted tiene sobre las universidades no es completa. Las principales universidades del país son las autónomas la Universidad Central de Venezuela (Caracas), la Universidad de los Andes (Mérida), la Universidad del Zulia (Maracaibo) y la Universidad de Carabobo (Valencia); estas universidades eligen sus autoridades con el! voto de profesores y estudiantes (para estos últimos su voto vale el 25 % del total de votos profesorales). Dichas universidades están en manos de fuerzas políticas opositoras al gobierno de Chávez. Por lo menos en LUZ, mi universidad, está controlada por grupos políticos de derecha que actúan como mafias burocráticas repartiéndose las instancias de poder internas, desnaturalizando el carácter académico de la institución y fomentando el clientelismo entre profesores y estudiantes. Quienes dirigen las universidades autónomas, por lo menos así ocurre en LUZ, son los jefes de esos grupos burocráticos, que han hecho carrera política en la institución subiendo de cargo en cargo hasta llegar al cuerpo rectoral, no poseen mayores credenciales académicas y más bien deja mucho que desear su currículum. En otros países los rectores de las universidades se eligen entre los doctores más eminentes, entre los que poseen mayores credenciales académicas y reconocimiento entre las comunidad es científicas. Aquí en LUZ llegan al rectorado los más avispados, aunque nunca hayan publicado ni un artículo en revistas científicas. Estos grupos son realmente de temer; han desarrollado a lo largo de décadas unas sólidas redes clientelares que son casi imposible romperlas. Yo tengo un lustro luchando contra estas mafias, junto a una minoría de profesores que compartimos las mismas inquietudes, y es poco lo logrado hasta ahora. El espacio no permite contar anecdotas que le pararían los pelos a cualquiera. Sólo suelto esta perla el presidente del centro de estudiantes de mi facultad fue detenido con diez kilos de droga; la decana (militante del partido Copei, socialcristiano) intercede ante la policía para que lo suelten un día antes de las elecciones estudiantiles, pues el estudiante pertenece a un grupo qe ella apoya. El muchacho procede a organizar, con bandas encapuchadas y armadas con pistolas y bombas lacrimógenas, el asalto contra el departamento de química, el día de las elecciones, para evitar la derrota de su grupo en el proceso electoral. Afortunadamente no hubo heridos ni muertos, pero no pudimos sancionar a los estudiantes responsables porque los profesores que fueron testigos y víctimas del asalto se negaron a declarar, por temor a represalias de los estudiantes (si se pueden llamar tales). Si usted lo desea, le puedo enviar las denuncias que por la prensa escrita yo realicé contra estos grupos pseudo estudiantiles en ese momento (noviembre/2000). Esa decana perdió su intento de reelección, y ganamos con una propuesta independiente y académica. Pero somos un grano de arena en la playa, nuestra facultad es muy pequeña con relación a la universidad. Esta es la realidad de las universidades venezolanas. Yo defiendo la autonomía, siempre lo he hecho. Pero la autonomía ha servido en Venezuela para que los fines académicos de las universidades se olviden a favor de los intereses grupales de las mafias burocráticas que las controlan. El gobierno de Chávez no ha formulado propuestas concretas sobre las universidades, salvo la propuesta general de hacer una "constituyente universitaria". Este año debe discutirse en la Asamblea Nacional una nueva ley de universidades, y supongo que se profundizará la lucha política y de ideas sobre cómo reorganizar las universidades en el país. En la facultad de ciencias estamos elaborando una propuesta al respecto, que puedo hacer llegar a los interesados. Finalmente, sobre los medios de comunicación, creo que tampoco hay suficiente información sobre la realidad venezolana. Este gobierno ha sido el más permisivo de la historia en cuanto a libertad de expresión, aunque el discurso de Chávez pareciera no ajustarse a lo que realmente ocurre. En el pasado la democracia puntofijista ejecutó juicios militares contra periodistas, escritores y cineastas, llevando a prisión a los afectados la periodista Irma Barreto, el cineasta Luis Correa y el escritor Diego Salazar. Actualmente no hay presos políticos, ni juicios políticos de ningún tipo, ni perseguidos, ni exiliados, y mucho menos asesinados por razones políticas. Creo que los historiadores debemos ceñirnos a los hechos al realizar nuestro trabajo, antes de dejarnos llevar por informaciones periodísticas manipuladas o en el mejor de los casos unilaterales.
